well this is not just another junction anymore and not less than the most prominent 'square' of world's top cities. This is Esplanade junction - Kolkata's media circles know as 'metro channel' (as it's bang opposite the metro cinema).
Known well by citizens also as Dharamtola crossing, this crossing now is a usual bottleneck. records and media readings have shown that almost everyday there's a rally, gathering or a get-together here - for various reasons. Teachers who don't get salary, come here. Associations who don't want to pay taxes come here. Political parties that prefer settling verbal scores, come here. Students who don't want to attend college, come here presenting rally as an excuse. The list is endless. It's what now 'jantar mantar' is to Delhi - where sugarcane farmers to activisits for justices of various nature gather now and then.
One vital issue that recently got highlighted, however, is that for the city of processions, there's a genuine crisis of holding political rallies that do not disturb day to day life. Holding rallies in open spaces are not environment friendly. Holding rallies on roads, choke traffic.Holding rallies in auditoriums can't hold thousands of people together....where should you go?
While the city's population is hold breathless, it's genuinely hours of happiness for thousands who throng the city in these gatherings....from tea without milk (lal-cha) to spicy puffed rice (jhaal muri), you will find street food vendors and small magazine sellers doing brisk business...the grand Indian circus unfolds with stunts of varying nature....on dais, off dais!
Between competing audiences, speakers and vendors - there's one section of society that's seriously damned at almost each of these congregations....the ever-chirpy Kolkata journo. But this is just one story, people never hear. The story of the story-tellers who bring even the minutest shift in weather grades to your doorstep.
