globally, in due course of time, each one of us will have a unique identity fed into servers. systems in various countries are at different levels of progress in doing so. Experts have opined the pros n cons of this process.
Transparency in allocation and distribution of resources and dues, respectively, will be greatly enhanced. It will be possible to carry out macro-calculations in real-time (with just time lag required for a 'refreshed' status after data is keyed in) without having to wait for a day, week, month, quarter, year or a decade (as in case of census).
Just think of a dream matrix that would present to us numbers just like stocks: people who got employed this hour, people who are in the air this moment, people who are watching a particular film in this particular show, people who have received their salary, people who visited a doctor because they have fallen ill, people down with malaria, etc...correspondingly, it will be possible to alter macro-decisions in smaller phases - increase expenditure on a particular production process, direct and strengthen supply of a commodity to a particular region, how a film is doing in cinemas at the given moment without waiting for box-office reports, etc.
Just like the benefits, there's also fear of misuse of the data. are you really at home or on the beach. were you lying when you said the train was late, hence you couldn't reach for a particular meet in time. do you eat deep into your pockets with debts or have enough to sustain...the list can be endless...based on which your true social and elitism-level will be clear!
while it may be difficult to call ourselves with 10-12 digit-numbers, it may not be so if some blue+tooth technology helps us with profile updates - as we walk, wait, travel, eat in a restaurant - in a particular area. people we know as 'green' dots, unknown as 'blue', persons to avoid as 'red' and varying categories.
will the wrist-top screens make us more mechanical. will the joy of discovering and re-discovering our friends to be or friends-lost disappear. Will the 'hi! are you so and so' disappear. Or 'excuse me, which way is college?' will never be asked. In totality, will we be so conscious about each one of us that all our emotional responses too will be numerical and calculated, predictable...
well, if it does, writers and artists will have to device newer forms of literature for readers/viewers/listeners (if i add one more category - 'sensible'/s) for this futuristic generation. will shakespeares of future won't get same appreciation? will the strokes of pigments on canvas fail to make us emotive? will music be defined as say 500 million combinations of varying string strokes. will sports be devised and customized further to the extent of individual demands...
there's no end to how numbers will define and refine our life-systems. the journey from post-mail to e-mail and subsequent status updates changed us like never before. the internet+ world is now a certainty. It's only a matter of time before many existing fields of studies will have to be discarded or re-defined. Gear-up for a world long awaited! Digital buddy, welcome to future!
